The chancellor of the Dallas County (Texas) Community College District, Joe May, discusses the non-academic barriers to student success he has seen in his institutions.
May explains, “I am pretty well convinced that the academic barriers often are the smallest piece of the challenge that they face because I can point to you many academically gifted young men and women coming out of high school, but don’t see college as an option because they had been raised in the lowest socioeconomic quartile. Their parents had told them all their lives that they can’t afford to send them to college.”
