Podcast: Reflections on a Crazy Year, What’s Next for Higher Ed

As season three of the FutureU podcast comes to a close, Micheal Horn and Jeff Selingo reflect upon the disturbances that higher education has faced this year and discuss future issues to come.

One of Selingo’s chief concerns is the role that state budget cuts will play in the coming year. He says “Public universities, after the last recession, it took them years to recover. The question for me is what’s going to happen with state budgets going into this fall. We know that enrollment in public universities has gone way up in recent years and we know that it also may happen coming out of this pandemic as students, parents, and adult students look for less expensive options. So the question is are we going to see the same thing happen a second time around where we see a big state disinvestment in higher education that takes years to recover from.”
