In this episode, Michael Horn and Jeff Selingo interview Matt Sigelman, the president of the Burning Glass Institute, about the growing landscape of non-degree credentials and their economic value. Although the past decade has seen a surge in alternative credentials, Sigelman notes that only about one in three delivers meaningful returns on investment for graduates.
Despite rapid changes in the labor market, Sigelman remains confident in the relevance of the four-year degree: “I think it’s way too early to think about the demise of the degree. Skills-based hiring as a movement is premised on the notion that we can hire for skills instead of degrees. And, so far, that’s not what we’re actually seeing. We haven’t seen big changes in employer behavior.”
