Digital Trailblazers: Lessons from a School on the Frontier of Artificial Intelligence

Download Report

Artificial intelligence has arrived in America’s schools faster than most educators and policymakers were prepared for. In less than four years, generative AI tools have moved from novelty to everyday reality for millions of students and teachers, reshaping how young people complete assignments, access information, and increasingly, how they learn. Yet while students are already using AI, many schools remain uncertain about how to respond.

In Digital Trailblazers: Lessons from a School on the Frontier of Artificial Intelligence, FutureEd Policy Analyst Tara Moon examines how Washington Leadership Academy, a public charter high school in Washington, D.C., serving predominantly Black, Brown, and low-income students, has emerged as an early adopter of AI in education. Drawing on classroom observations and interviews with educators and students, the report explores how WLA has integrated AI into teaching, learning, and school operations while navigating difficult questions about cheating, creativity, privacy, and the future role of teachers. The report highlights both the opportunities and challenges AI presents for schools and argues that without stronger policy guidance and support, many students—particularly those in under-resourced schools—risk being left behind in the AI era.
